I spent the day at work on the farm. Not the norm. I was last up in Michigan in January 2018 when it was snowing like mad, 3 feet on the ground with more falling. It rained a lot while I was here, but Wednesday night I went running with my coworker. He took me to a local park with trails leading to the lake. The lake here has a winding, sandy beach. It was a steady climb upwards; you’d think it would include a descent to the water. Not so. Up and up we went. The evening was cool, light fog in the lowlands. The tree canopy cast a wonderful green shade from the haze. The trail was much harder than I was used to, and I was feeling all 17 years of the age difference between us. I did not give up. I couldn’t breathe, but I kept at it, just dug in and made myself do it.
We descended at the last, right to the shore, out of the trees and there it was, foggy, water right up to the edge, a thin line of sand barely legible. Do lakes have tides?
We turned and ran back. I hated running back up and down and up and down the second time as much as the first, but I was warmed up by then and kept at it, chipping away while he talked, jogging like a bunny next to me. When we hit the flat elevation I could talk and we jogged along past the frisby-golfers. It was exactly what I needed after a couple of flights. We had dinner at a little southern place on the water and talked shop and then I went back to work for a while. I promised myself I would not stay up too late, but I did not finish until after midnight. No tv, but Google told me the Blues won, tying the Stanley Cup 1-1, which is great as they return back home for the next game. I’m so proud of our team.
Today, we walked the perimeter of the property and my feet got soaked, plus it was raining on and off, but it was worth it, beautiful, lots of chickens, ducks, goats and sheep. Three sets of two lambs were born in the last 3 weeks. They are the kind of animal that pops out of the womb able to walk. They were prancing around, still cuddly. I tried really hard to get the poop off the bottom of my shoes!! I talked to the local animal caretaker who told me the different names of them, rams, ewes and that kind of thing. She said ewes gestate 3-5 months (could there be that big of a variance?!). The ram was a big ugly guy all overgrown with curly horns. The lambs' horns had grown to 4" in just 2 weeks!
It was a long ride back to the airport and all of the flights everywhere are delayed because the whole damn weather has gone nuts, but I will get home tonight, sometime.
Going back up to Michigan - close to where I was. It’s a beautiful place. I could stand it in the summer, but I cannot stand the snow in the winter. We passed vineyards today with dead vines - a snow-cyclone or some such thing came by last winter and killed them off. That is the kind of winter happening in Michigan.
I don’t know about you, but sitting next to business men on these flights leaves a lot to be desired. They might be dressed in really nice suits, but they fart a lot. I cannot fathom how anyone could let it rip in an enclosed space as tight as an airplane, and yet they do. Good times.
Let’s just leave it there with the farts.
